Multi-vehicle crash kills 1, injures 3

Arkansas State Police reported that a four-vehicle accident in Lawrence County at about 9:20 a.m. on Oct. 30 claimed the life of a 24-year-old Hardy woman. Three other individuals involved suffered injuries.

According to police, the fatal chain-reaction crash transpired on U.S. 63 near a rest area located between Imboden and Black Rock when the driver of a southbound Ford Explorer swerved over into the opposite lane and crashed head-on into a semi-truck. Following the first collision, the semi-truck then crashed into two other southbound vehicles, a Chevy pickup truck and a Ford SUV. The Hardy woman who died was driving the Chevy pickup truck. The semi-truck driver and two people in the Ford Explorer, a passenger and the driver, were also hurt. A fifth motorist whose car was hit by flying debris was able to avoid the collision and did not report any injuries.

In such cases where a family has undergone the loss of a loved one as the result of a crash, a wrongful death claim may be filed in a civil court, and compensation may be recovered for the plaintiff. A local attorney who is experienced in such cases may be able to analyze the police report for evidence linking the crash with negligence on the part of another driver. For example, if the driver was distracted, speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident, the driver may be held liable for damages to the family of the decedent.

Typically, plaintiffs who prevail in wrongful death lawsuits are able to recover restitution for damages stemming from the accident including medical and funeral costs and property damage. In some cases, the courts may order compensation for the family's loss of companionship.
