Driving in wet weather

| Apr 14, 2015 | Uncategorized

Most Arkansas drivers know that as the weather warms up, it is more likely to rain. While the rain may potentially make the roads more dangerous to traverse, many drivers will still take to the roads despite the risk. For drivers who do drive in wet conditions, there is a number of wet weather driving tips available.

One of the most important things that drivers can do to reduce the risk of a crash is to maintain adequate space between vehicles. In general, drivers should stay at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front of them; when the roads are wet and slippery, this distance should be increased to more than four seconds. This distance allows the driver to react should the vehicle in front of them stop suddenly. Another wet weather driving safety tip regards potholes; if possible, drivers should try to avoid potholes at all times. However, if a pothole cannot be avoided, drivers should avoid hitting the brakes while they are passing over the hole.

A third safety tip that drivers should be aware of is that, as the weather warms up, they should be checking their tires. If the tire treads are too worn, the driver may not be able to stop suddenly. Additionally, a properly inflated tire means that the tire is less likely to burst. Finally, drivers should not panic if their car begins to skid or hydroplane. The AAA stated that drivers should continue to steer in the direction that they want to go but avoid slamming on the brakes.

When a car accident occurs, the weather condition will be taken into account to determine liability. If it was determined that the other driver was operating their vehicle dangerously, such as driving too fast on wet roads, the other person may file a personal injury lawsuit against the liable driver.
