Man killed in shooting at ZombiCon

| Nov 5, 2015 | Wrongful Death

Arkansas residents may be interested to learn about a fatal shooting that took place at a zombie-themed event in Florida. A 20-year-old man was killed while attending ZombiCon, a charity event in downtown Fort Myers that drew 20,000 attendees on Oct. 17. Five other people were wounded in the shooting that took place in a crowd of people dressed in zombie costumes.

The fatal shooting occurred at about 11:44 p.m. when a single gunman opened fire on a crowd. Police have not yet located the shooter, though a witness recalls being so close to the shooter that he could smell his breath. An attorney filing the wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the decedent’s family said that security at the event was pathetic, and security personnel were not prepared to handle the crowd.

The lawsuit has named as defendants the event organizers and Southwest Florida Security and Investigations, the company that provided security services for the event. The family’s attorney said that they are considering filing additional claims against the city of Fort Myers and the police department in Fort Myers. The family is seeking $5 million in compensation for damages.

When a person is killed as a result of someone’s negligent or willful actions, the surviving family members may want to meet with an attorney to discuss the viability of filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the responsible party. Legal counsel can explain the procedures involved as well as the types of damages that can be sought under the applicable state statute, such as funeral and burial expenses and, in some cases, loss of support.
