Treating chemical burns in Arkansas

| Dec 10, 2015 | Burn Injuries

It is possible to experience a chemical burn after exposure to many different substances such as paint thinner or gasoline. Common symptoms of such a burn include redness and a burning sensation near the burn site. While these symptoms may present themselves immediately, they may not present themselves for several hours after mild exposure. In either situation, it is important to rinse the skin and remove any jewelry or clothing that may have been contaminated.

In the event of an immediate chemical burn, an individual should apply gauze or a bandage loosely over the burned skin. It may also be appropriate to take a pain reliever to get some or all of the symptoms to subside. Those who have suffered an immediate burn may wish to get a tetanus shot, and everyone should have such a shot every 10 years.

Depending on where the burn occurred, it may be necessary to seek care immediately. For instance, if an individual experiences burns to the eyes, to a major joint or to the groin, a trip to the hospital may be necessary to keep damage to a minimum. The same is true if the burn penetrates the first layer of the skin or covers more than three inches of skin.

People who have suffered a chemical burn injury due to the negligence of another party may want to meet with a personal injury attorney to determine if there are any legal remedies available. In some cases, the attorney may find it advisable to file a lawsuit against the at-fault party seeking compensation for medical expenses and other damages that have been incurred.
