Arkansas drivers and the rise in 2015 traffic deaths

| Feb 24, 2016 | Car Accidents

Arkansas residents should be aware of the rise in traffic deaths that occurred within the first nine months of 2015. The 9.3 percent increase is especially noticeable in contrast to years of falling traffic fatality numbers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 26,000 individuals died within the first nine months of 2015 alone. In the first nine months of 2014, 23,796 people died in traffic-related accidents.

Traffic deaths declined 22 percent from 2000 to 2014. The NHTSA reports that the change is a sign that it needs to increase its efforts. In response, the agency has begun holding regional summits to examine the various causes of traffic deaths as well as the human behavior that leads to accidents. NHTSA research has shown that more than 90 percent of car crashes involve human factors.

The NHTSA administrator said that the agency was not going to wait until the problem worsened. A push is needed for behavioral changes among drivers to improve traffic safety. Increasing safety requires new initiatives and a continuation of efforts to address such issues as drivers not wearing their seat belts and drivers who get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.

People who are injured in car collisions often face high medical expenses and long periods of rehabilitation. In many cases, their financial situation is worsened due to an inability to return to gainful employment. If it can be determined that such an accident was caused by the negligence of another motorist, a personal injury attorney could be of assistance to an injured victim in seeking compensation from the at-fault driver.
