One study evaluated 32 adult male patients who came into the ICU with severe injuries and burn trauma covering at least 20 percent of their bodies. Researchers found that there were significant differences in bone metabolism regulators and turnover markers during the course of the study. The changes observed suggest that alterations in bone metabolism have a negative impact on the structure and bone quality of burn injury victims.
In the early phase of the study, participants showed increases in certain markers, including procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide, sclerostin, bone-specific alkaline phosphate and fibroblast growth factor 23. There were also changes in levels of osteoprotegerin and phosphate. The prolonged phase of testing showed significant increases in P1NP, sclerostin, BALP and albumin, among others. There were also decreases in FGF23 and phosphate, along with several other levels. This research demonstrates a rapid change in bone resorption markers among adult male participants.
