20-year-old woman identified as hit-and-run victim

Officials report that an Arkansas woman who was struck by a car in Saline County on Aug. 21 has died from the injuries she sustained. Police charged the driver whose vehicle struck her with first-degree murder, driving on a suspended license and four counts of leaving the scene of an accident.

Officials say the 20-year-old victim was struck while walking in a store parking lot and subsequently dragged for many feet. The severity of her injuries caused her to be flown via helicopter to an area hospital, where she later died. The driver of the vehicle, a 39-year-old man, also reportedly hit three different vehicles on the interstate before entering the parking lot.

Surveillance video from the store shows the driver maneuvering the vehicle into the parking lot where the woman was struck, and officers say he appeared to speed up before hitting her. Prior to this incident, officers say he was arrested for public intoxication after admitting to taking a drug. The incident remained under investigation at the time of the report, and police were not yet sure if there were any drugs or alcohol in the driver's system at the time of the accident.

In any fatal accident involving a negligent driver, the family is left to grieve the loss of a loved one while dealing with substantial medical bills, insurance payments and more. In some cases, family members could have cause to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault driver in order to recover damages. An attorney may be able to investigate the accident and help families file a successful claim.
